2.6.02 AUSTSWIM Teacher Code
of Behavior
The primary objective of the AUSTSWIM Teacher Code of Behaviour
is to promote the value of AUSTSWIM qualified teachers. the AUSTSWIM
teacher code of behaviour will:
- Encourage public confidence in aquatic education.
- Publicise AUSTSWIM's expectations of its teachers.
- Show that AUSTSWIM teachers accept a standard of practice.
- Provide a benchmark for appropriate behaviour.
All trainees for and holders of AUSTSWIM awards
agree to:
Abide by the AUSTSWIM Teacher Code of Behaviour, award regulations
and policies.
- Follow policy for enforcement of this Code.
- Refer to established procedures for appealing against assessment
results.
- Accept any judgements made by AUSTSWIM and/or its Branches or
Agents.
- Teach within the limits of competence deemed by the AUSTSWIM
Awards held.
- Follow policy and guidelines relating to safety, class ratios,
emergency procedures and duty of care.
Promote the participation of all Australians in safe and enjoyable
swimming and water safety programs conducted by qualified personnel.
- Maintain AUSTSWIM Awards.
- Participate in regular professional development.
- Abide by established standards for the aquatic facility safety.
- Promote and deliver only safe and enjoyable aquatic activities.
- Show concern for the health, safety and welfare of participants
and colleagues.
Enhance water safety knowledge while developing swimming; water
safety and survival skills.
- Provide a balanced program of swimming and water safety.
- Provide a planned and sequential program of aquatic skill development
based on individual needs.
Provide equal opportunity for all to learn swimming, water safety
and survival skills.
- Modify the program to cater for those with disabilities, adult
learners and those with injuries.
Ensure that all persons under tuition are treated with courtesy
and respect deserving of all people, irrespective if individual
differences and needs.
- Refrain from any discriminatory practices by treating everyone
equally.
- Be alert to any form of abuse between participants.
Represent AUSTSWIM and the swimming and water safety teaching industry
in a professional manner without bringing the teaching profession
or AUSTSWIM into disrepute.
- Be a role model for other AUSTSWIM teachers.
- Behave professionally and accept responsibility for actions.
- Extend professional courtesy to other AUSTSWIM teachers, industry
colleagues, participants and parents.
- Refrain from any form of verbal, physical or emotional abuse.
- Refrain from any form of sexual harassment towards participants.
- Refrain from using the influence of a teaching position to encourage
inappropriate intimacy between teacher and participants.
- Ensure that methods of supporting participants in the water
are consistent with established practices.
- Ensure physical support is only provided to facilitate learning
or safe performance.
