What job opportunities does the AUSTSWIM Award allow me to pursue?

The AUSTSWIM Award enables you to gain employment as a teacher if swimming and water safety. Search for aquatic facilities that employ AUSTSWIM teachers.

What is the minimum age to enrol into an AUSTSWIM course?

Candidates my enrol at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the award until they are 17 years of age.

What AUSTSWIM course do I enrol into first?

Candidates must first enrol into the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Award course.

Do you need to re-register?

Yes. AUSTSWIM teachers must re-register every three years. This registration process ensures AUSTSWIM teachers remain current with industry standards.

At what age should my child begin swimming and water safety lessons?

AUSTSWIM recommends that an infant can join an aquatic activity program in a commercial facility from 6 months of age. It's recommended infants should also be introduced to the aquatic environment via home water play. This is a great way to introduce your infant to the water before commencing formal lessons.

What role do parents play in aquatic education?

Parents are children’s first teachers. Therefore it is important that parents take an active interest in the child’s lesson. Outside of the lesson, the parent plays vital role in educating their child about the importance of learning swimming and water safety skills and the risks associated with the aquatic environment.

Always supervise children when in and around water. Domestic water dangers include nappy buckets, fish ponds, bathtubs, toilets, wading pools and any other backyard catchment of water.

Where are lessons conducted?

Water familiarisation, swimming and water safety lessons are conducted at commercial aquatic facilities including private swim schools and home based centres. Look for the AUSTSWIM platypus logo when you visit your aquatic facility to ensure that AUSTSWIM teachers are employed. What qualifications should the swimming teacher hold?

The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Infant Aquatics Qualification is recommended for teachers instructing infant and preschool programs (6 months up to 4 years of age). The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Qualification is recommended for teachers who instruct swimming and water safety programs for children from 4 years of age to adults.

What will the lessons consist of?

AUSTSWIM Teachers realise the importance of allowing students to learn at their own rate. The key to successful learning is the emphasis placed on a positive environment, working towards aquatic safety, enjoyment and skill acquisition.

    Infant and Preschool Programs
    Lessons should consist of a range of activities that promote water familiarisation, including fun and enjoyment, exploration and independence, social interaction, water safety education, skill acquisition and parent education.
    Swimming and Water Safety Programs
    Lessons should consist of a range of activities that promote swimming and water safety, including fun, games, water safety education, skill promotion, stroke development, ongoing evaluation and parent education.

How many children will be in the class?

AUSTSWIM recommend class ratios that vary according to the age and ability of the children and the type of venue being utilised. Following the research undertaken by the AUSTSWIM Council, guidelines for infant and preschool aquatic programs have been divided into the following categories:

How quickly will my child learn?

Learning is a continuous process that evolves over period of time. It is important to remember that children learn at different rates and need to practice their swimming and water safety skills on a regular basis. If they do have a break from lessons, their ability to perform previously mastered skills may have dropped off and the instructor will need to revise those skills before progressing to more advanced skills.
